How is non-alcoholic wine different from grape juice?

You will sometimes hear the comment, when discussing non-alcoholic wine: “Wine without the alcohol? That’s just grape juice, then.” Thanks for that, Colin. But is it true? Does Colin have a point? And if not, how is non-alcoholic wine different from grape juice?

How is non-alcoholic wine different from grape juice?

Let’s take a look (and see if we can put Colin in his place).

What is non-alcoholic wine?

Non-alcoholic wine is a type of wine that has had its alcohol content removed or reduced, so that the alcohol content is 0.05 per cent or less. This can be done through various methods, including reverse osmosis, spinning cone column, or vacuum distillation. These methods remove the alcohol from the wine while preserving as much flavour and aroma as possible.

Non-alcoholic wine is made from the same grapes as traditional wine. The difference lies in the fermentation process. During the fermentation process, yeast consumes sugar and converts it into alcohol. To make non-alcoholic wine, the fermentation process is stopped before the yeast has a chance to convert all the sugar into alcohol. This leaves some residual sugar in the wine, which gives it a slightly sweeter taste than the same style of traditional, alcoholic wine.

What is grape juice?

Grape juice is a non-alcoholic beverage made from grapes. It is made by pressing the juice out of grapes and filtering it to remove any pulp or solids. Grape juice can be made from any type of grape, but some varieties are better suited for juice production than others, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Grape juice is a great source of vitamins and antioxidants and has been shown to have many health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer.

How is non-alcoholic wine different from grape juice?

While both non-alcoholic wine and grape juice are made from grapes, there are several key differences between the two, namely:

  • Fermentation
  • Alcohol content
  • Flavour and aroma
  • Uses
  • Nutritional value

Fermentation

The biggest difference between non-alcoholic wine and grape juice is the fermentation process. Non-alcoholic wine goes through a fermentation process, just like traditional wine. However, as mentioned, the fermentation process is stopped before all the sugar is converted into alcohol.

Grape juice, on the other hand, is not fermented. The juice is simply extracted from the grapes and filtered to remove any pulp or solids. Grape juice contains all the natural sugars present in the grapes, but they have not been converted into alcohol.

Alcohol content

The most obvious difference between non-alcoholic wine and grape juice is the alcohol content. Non-alcoholic wine typically contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume, while grape juice contains no alcohol. The alcohol content of non-alcoholic wine is negligible (you are highly unlikely to be physically able to drink enough to feel any intoxicating effect) but it is worth noting.

Flavour and aroma

Non-alcoholic wine and grape juice also differ in terms of their flavour and aroma. Non-alcoholic wine, as it goes through a similar production process, is similar to traditional wine. However, the absence of alcohol can affect the taste and aroma of the wine. Non-alcoholic wine is often described as having a slightly sweeter taste than traditional wine, due to those residual sugars.

Grape juice, on the other hand, has a more distinctly fruity flavour and aroma. The flavour of grape juice can vary depending on the type of grape used and how it was processed. Some grape juices are sweeter than others, while others may have a tart or bitter taste – but they taste like a juice drink, not a variation of wine.

Uses

Non-alcoholic wine is often used as a substitute for traditional wine in recipes, such as sauces and marinades. And, obviously, is ideal for people who want to enjoy the taste and experience of wine without the alcohol content. Grape juice is commonly consumed as a standalone beverage or used as an ingredient in smoothies, cocktails, and baked goods. It is also a popular choice for children, as it is a flavourful alternative to soda.

Nutritional value

Non-alcoholic wine is typically lower in calories and sugar than traditional wine, but it still contains some residual sugar. Grape juice is, however, a good source of vitamins and antioxidants.

On average an eight-ounce serving of non-alcoholic wine will contain around 30 to 40 calories and 7 to 10 grams of sugar, while the same serving of grape juice contains around 120 to 150 calories and 30 to 40 grams of sugar.

In summary, Colin is wrong.

Non-alcoholic wine and grape juice are both made from grapes, true; but they differ in several ways. Non-alcoholic wine is a good option for people who want to enjoy the taste and experience of wine without the alcohol content, while grape juice is a popular beverage for children and adults alike. Even though it is “non-alcoholic”; it’s really not the done thing to give kids wine.
